The VW Transporter (T7) Commerce Pro with factory camper prep and the Ford Transit Custom Camper Donor are base vehicles designed to be converted into campervans. However, that doesn’t mean every converter can use them. Far from it. In fact, only a select number of converters with VCA Whole Vehicle Type Approval have access to these exclusive camper-specific vehicles.
We are, of course, one of those converters and we’re pleased to be able to offer our latest models, Sport GT, Sport GT XS, and Explorer on these base vehicles that are designed to be converted.
Across the VW and Ford platforms, you will find swivelling seats, 40mm lower seat bases for extra headroom, twin AGM leisure batteries, and lithium leisure batteries, all straight from the factory. Giving us a base that is built right from the start, these camper-specific features make both the VW Transporter and the Ford Transit Custom less like a commercial vehicle, and exactly like a leisure vehicle.
The leisure vehicle specific features don’t end there though. In addition to the features offered as standard from the factory, we also order our new VW and Ford base vehicles with metallic paint, soft-close side loading doors, and glazed tailgates with wash/wipe and heated rear windows. Plus they also have 17″ alloy wheels, and LED rear lights too.
So you may be asking why are these base vehicles only available to select converters? Well, we mentioned above that the converter must have VCA Whole Vehicle Type Approval, and it’s because this is needed to be able to register these vehicles. Each vehicle arrives with us unregistered and must be converted prior to registration. To be able to register the vehicle as a ‘motor caravan’, the converter must issue it with a Second Stage Certificate of Conformity, which can only be done by converters holding type approval.
The benefits of these vehicles don’t just stop at the spec either. As they are registered as ‘motor caravans’, they are seen as exactly that. Not a ‘panel van with side windows’, like the conversions offered by non-approved converters. This brings with it added benefits that include the following:
- You will be the first registered keeper
- You won’t be subject to the speed limits imposed on commercial vehicles, instead you will be free to travel at the same speeds as cars on all roads
- Potential for reduced insurance costs
- Potential for higher resale value
