What is Camper Donor Spec?

Camper Donor Spec or Factory Camper Prep refers to the trim level of a base vehicle that has been specifically built by the manufacturer for conversion into a campervan. Unlike the base vehicles typically used by campervan converters, these are designed to be leisure vehicles and are not commercial vehicles.

If you’re looking at a Ford, this will generally be called ‘Camper Donor Spec’ and these vehicles will be badged as a Ford Tourneo. Whilst if looking at a VW, this will generally be called ‘Factory Camper Prep’ and these vehicles will be badged as a VW Transporter.

As both Ford and VW offer this, at Redline Campers, we are pleased to be able to offer our Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom and our VW Transporter campervans on both of these camper-specific platforms. However, this isn’t the case for all converters.

Whilst these are the ideal platforms to build campervans on, only a select number of converters in the UK have authorisation from the manufacturers to do so. That’s because each vehicle must go through a certified conversion process and cannot be registered until a converter has issued a Second Stage Certificate of Conformity. To be able to issue this, the converter must hold full Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) from the VCA, ensuring the finished campervan meets strict safety, compliance, and quality standards.

What do Camper Donor Spec and Factory Camper Prep vehicles give you?

Whether you choose a Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom or a New VW Transporter (T7), if it has been built to Camper Donor Spec/Factory Camper Prep, you will be getting a vehicle that has been built right from the start. This means it will already have the key structural and electrical provisions in place from the manufacturer. The benefit to you is improved build quality, better system integration, and a cleaner, more reliable finished compared to aftermarket conversions.

As these vehicles are designed to be leisure vehicles, they come with leisure vehicle-specific features. These include factory-fitted driver and passenger seat swivels, and 40mm lower seat bases for noticeable more headroom and a more comfortable living space. Whilst the electrical setup of these vehicles includes twin AGM engine batteries alongside a dedicated lithium leisure battery for reliable off-grid performance.

As these vehicles are only available to selected converters, it will always be worth asking about the base vehicle if you’re considering a campervan conversion. Whilst campervans built on Ford and VW base vehicles designed for commercial use will look the same at first-glance, you will ultimately find that there is a world of difference.

By using these base vehicles, market-leading appliances and components, and our own roofs and furniture, we are happy to say our campervans are as close to OEM-level quality as it gets. However, that’s not where the benefits end.

In addition to the quality of the conversion, you will also be the first registered keeper on the V5, and the vehicle will be correctly classified as a motor caravan – not a panel van with side windows. That means you are not subject to reduced commercial vehicle speed limits, which are typically 10mph lower than cars and motor caravans. Whilst it can also result in more favourable insurance premiums and higher future resale values.

There’s also complete peace of mind from day one. The warranty and service package begin from the point of registration in your name, and we provide a five-year conversion warranty with all brand new campervan conversions.
