What is DSG?

DSG is short for Direct Shift Gearbox and is a type of dual-clutch automatic transmission used by the Volkswagen Group in its VW, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT vehicles. You will find this type of transmission as an option in our VW T6, T6.1, and T7 campervans.

Combining the best aspects of manual and automatic gearboxes, DSG offers quick, smooth gear changes without the need for a manual clutch pedal. It does this by utilising a pair of electronically controlled clutches that the vehicle can engage or disengage automatically.

One clutch is used to transmit the engine’s power through the gearbox to the vehicle’s wheels. While this is happening, the vehicle’s onboard computer predicts which gear you’ll need next and uses the second clutch to get that gear ready.

As a result, you will find gear changes are quicker in DSG vehicles compared with conventional automatics, whilst fuel consumption will generally be lower too.
