What are the differences between the VW T6.1 and VW T7?

Whilst the differences between the VW T6 and VW T6.1 may have been subtle, the differences between the VW T6.1 and VW T7 could be described as being massive.

A new name

The first of these differences is the naming of this new generation. For starters, Volkswagen have done away with the numbering entirely and are simply calling this new generation, the VW Transporter. Most people (us included) appear to be ignoring this though and are continuing to call the vehicle, the T7. Whether we will get used to simply calling it the VW Transporter remains to be seen.

The biggest difference though was one of the worst kept secrets out there. That’s the fact that the new VW Transporter has more in common with the Ford Transit Custom than it does its predecessor.

Built and assembled by Ford

Assembled alongside the Ford Transit Custom by Ford Otosan in Turkey, the VW T7 is built on the Ford Pro platform. This means it shares the same platform and components as its Ford counterpart.
This is in complete contrast to the VW T6 and T6.1 which were assembled by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at the company’s plants in Hannover, Germany, and Poznań, Poland. This means it’s a completely different vehicle to the VW T6 and T6.1, so the differences are vast.

A similar size

There are similarities though. One of the most obvious similarities is the size. The T6 and T6.1, and T7 are all mid-size vans. For this reason, there isn’t much difference when it comes to the size of these vans.
The short wheel base T6/T6.1 measures 4.9m in length, whilst the short wheel base T7 measures 5.05m in length. As for the long wheel base version of these vehicles, the T6/T6.1 measures 5.3m, whilst the T7 measures 5.45m.

When it comes to the height, this is exactly the same for both of these base vehicles. Both the VW T6/T6.1 and VW T7 are 2.1m once we’ve added our pop top roof. Without this, they both measure 2m in height.
Width is pretty similar too. The T6/T6.1 measures 2.29m, and the VW T7 measures 2.27m. So the new vehicle is a little narrower but there’s really not much in it.

Familiar engines but for now, not as much transmission choice or as many power output options

Another key similarity is the engine size, both platforms are available with 2.0L TDI engines. Though when it comes to transmission, there are differences. The T7 is only available in a 6-speed manual version, and an 8-speed DSG/automatic version. Whilst the T6/T6.1 was available in a 5-speed manual version, 6-speed manual version, and a 7-speed automatic/DSG version. Both vehicle types also have a 4MOTION all-wheel drive version available.

In terms of power outputs, the VW T6/T6.1 was available in 90bhp, 110bhp, 150bhp, 199bhp and 204bhp variants. However, the T7 reduces this choice as it is only available in 110bhp, 150bhp, and 170bhp variants currently.

All kinds of new tech, as standard

Looking at the features and functionality available in these vehicles. You will find that the T7 adds all kinds of new innovation to its offering. Standout features include the colour touchscreen with DAB+ and Apple Carplay/Android Auto being replaced with a 13” infotainment system also with DAB+, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Whilst you will find a whole host of driver aids available, as standard with the T7. These include Lane Assist lane departure warning system, Front Assist emergency braking system, Traffic sign recognition, a stop/start ignition button, and electric folding mirrors.
